Finding us and getting here
Oakington C of E Primary School cares about our global and village environment. Car journeys contribute to global warming and congestion. There are lots of other ways to get to our school, and they help us to keep fit too!
If you are coming from Oakington or Westwick, please walk or cycle if you can!
We are within easy cycling distance along off-road cycle paths from Histon/Impington and Girton. You can also cycle from other nearby villages or from Cambridge. Frequent buses connect Oakington with Cambridge, St Ives, Girton, Histon/Impington, Longstanton and Swavesey. For those who have no alternative to driving, we operate a Park & Stride scheme.
WALKING. The school is centrally located in Oakington within walking distance of all of Oakington and Westwick. There is a pelican crossing over Water Lane at the school.
CYCLING. We are a Bike It school, which means that we do everything we can to encourage and enable cycling by pupils, staff and other visitors to the school site. We have three secure cycle sheds, two in the playground, with lockers for helmets, and one near the school main entrance. Children's scooters can also be left in the bike sheds!
We offer on-road Bikeability (cycling proficiency) training to children in Years 5 and 6, teaching them to cycle safely alone. We also provide on-playground cycle training for younger children, so that they can accompany an adult on the road.
Excellent off-road cycle paths alongside the guided busway connect Oakington to Histon/Impington and north Cambridge in one direction, and Longstanton and Swavesey/Over in the other. There are also pavement cycle paths along Cambridge Road from Girton and along Park Lane from Histon.
BUS. The nearest bus stop to the school is served every 30 minutes by Cambridge Stagecoach Citi 6. Disembark at the village sign - the return bus stop is opposite.
There are evening and weekend services too (some run as Citi 5 and only go as far as Oakington crossroads).
A more frequent service (every 7 minutes Mon-Sat daytimes) connects the far end of Oakington (10 min walk from school) to Cambridge and St. Ives, using the guided busway. Guided buses also run from Trumpington, Cambridge Station, Huntingdon and Somersham.
You can plan your journey using www.traveline.info (the school's postcode is CB24 3AL.)
Don't forget to ask for a "Family Dayrider" ticket if you are travelling with children!
- CAR. The small school car park is for staff only. Please avoid parking on Water Lane or High Street - this causes congestion and makes walking and cycling along these roads more hazardous. Please park at the Pavilion car park, at the end of Queens Way, and walk round the corner to school (3 minutes).
Observe the 20 mph limit, operating in the morning and afternoon school run periods, and double-yellow lines on Water Lane outside school - they are there for the safety of children and other pedestrians and cyclists. Please don't walk across the school car park to get to the main door - use the path around the side!
